Distinctive insignia, 104th Aero Squadron, of sphinx (lion's body with wings and a female human's head). The 104th Aero Squadron was a Corps Observation Squadron assigned to the Fifth Corps Observation Group, First Army, on 7 August 1918. It was engaged in operations at St. Mihiel and the Argonne-Meuse 1st and 2nd offensives. The squadron fought 25 combats, was credited with 1 victory and suffered 4 casualties of 2 killed, 1 wounded and 1 prisoner. The squadron disbanded on 19 December 1918."

Lt. Mortimer Lawrance of the 104th Aero Squadron, was the last American to shoot down an enemy airplane in WW1 as the gunner in a Salmson 2A2. Photos taken by Mortimer Lawrance of the 104th Aero Squadron on 30th October 1918 (see last photos). This Photographing mission would eventually have Laurence awarded a Silver Star. Included in the photos below is a photo of a German artillery unit that he bombed. These are dead horses and Germans.
